A professional couples therapist can help you and your partner sort out your problems and build a strong relationship. He or she can also help you fine-tune a good relationship to make it better. Whether you are in the middle of a crisis, moving through an arduous transition time, or discovering unpleasant behaviors—a professional couples therapist can be a tremendous source of support, strength and growth.
Having a highly trained and objective third party helps you work through anger, resentment or frustration, and get to workable solutions. Our greatest pleasure is seeing couples emerge from a difficult situation feeling more intimate and committed than they ever thought possible.
All therapists at the Institute specialize in work with couples. They are licensed Psychologists and/or Marriage and Family Therapists with a level of experience and training that is unusual in other circles. Eleven therapists are located from San Francisco to Santa Jose. Some see clients evenings and weekends. Click here to learn more about our therapists. What does couples therapy cost? Fees range from $135 - $225 per 50-minute session. Most of the therapists at The Couples Institute charge about $150.00.
Do you have a sliding scale for fees? No, we don’t. But if our costs for therapy are too high for your budget, we encourage you to try our self-development resources and workshops, which are more affordable. And if you need a therapist with lower fees, Michelle Wangler is an intern who charges less. She trains with Co-Founder and Co-Director Ellyn Bader. You can also find low fee therapists at your county’s Family Service or Mental Health Departments. They are listed in the front of your telephone book by county.
Do you take insurance? Many of our clients submit their statements to their insurance companies for reimbursement. Since coverage varies widely, we recommend that you check with your insurance company to see what services your policy includes. Our billing statements comply with insurance requirements to facilitate your reimbursement. We are not affiliated with any HMOs or PPOs.
How long will we need to come? The duration of treatment depends on your situation and your goals. Some couples come for just a few visits, while others make a long-term effort.
Should I see a man or a woman? You might have a preference for working with a man or with a woman, but in fact, gender is not an issue for a trained, experienced therapist. Male and female therapists are equally prepared to deal with the problems confronting you.
How do you work? Our therapists are trained to help you establish a vision of how you want your relationship to be. We then work to build your expertise so you can develop the right relationship for you. How do you protect my confidentiality? All consultations and records are confidential. We do not email, fax or transmit health information by any electronic mode. Further, no one will be advised of the participation in counseling unless you specifically request it, in writing. The law provides certain exclusions for confidentiality (child abuse, adult or domestic abuse, health oversight, judicial or administrative proceedings, threat to health or safety, and worker's compensation).
